Probation Corrections Officer II - Laterals

ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside Probation Department is currently seeking lateral candidates to fill various Probation Correction Officer II positions throughout Riverside County.

To be considered, lateral candidates must be a current Probation Corrections Officer/Juvenile Corrections Officer within the State of California.

Lateral candidates must have completed Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Training and possess PC 832, CPR and First Aid certifications to be considered.

Under general supervision, supervises and cares for detainees in detention and/or treatment facilities of the Riverside County Probation Department; performs other related duties as required.

Probation Corrections Officers are defined as peace officers in Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code and are subject to selection and training standards as defined by the California Government Code and the Board of State and Community Corrections.

The Probation Corrections Officer II is the journey level classification in the Probation Corrections Officer series and typically reports to a Supervising Probation Officer.

Incumbents are expected to counsel and guide detainees residing in a detention or treatment environment.

Incumbents are typically assigned the more difficult and complex counseling duties which require an understanding of those factors affecting a detainee's motivation and behavior.

Incumbents may be expected to act in a lead capacity over the operation of a living unit in the absence of the Supervising Probation Officer or Senior Probation Corrections Officer, and they may be called upon to assist with assignments that require specialized training such as intake/release, transportation, court holding, and central control.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Provide supervision to detainees that may be over the age of 18 years, in a 24-hour, 7-day a week secure facility.

• Supervise the conduct and behavior of detainees; maintain necessary order and structure; direct the groups in constructive activities and impose restrictions when necessary.

• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions in an attempt to modify antisocial behavior and to assist detainees in adjusting to detention situations; provide guidance on personal problems such as relationships with peers, parents and school personnel.

• Instruct and encourage good manners, sportsmanship and proper attitudes towards work, play and citizenship.
