Construction Inspector - Public Works
General Description The Construction Inspector is to inspect underground water, wastewater and stormwater pipeline projects for compliance with city standards, contract specifications, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position.
Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Inspects the construction and testing of new water, wastewater, and stormwater pipelines and associated components to ensure work meets the required specifications.
Inspects the construction and testing of lift stations and associated components to ensure work meets the required specifications.
Inspects the rehabilitation and testing of existing pipelines and associated components to ensure work meets the required specifications.
Communicates results of initial and follow-up inspections to contractors.
Conducts the disinfection of new water pipelines and collects samples prior to placing pipelines into service.
Conducts fire hydrant flow testing.
Documents, records and maintains detailed records regarding inspection activities.
Verifies accuracy and coordinates changes to existing mapped infrastructure.
Assists in completing the condition assessment of pipelines and associated components.
Assists in preparing scopes of work and cost estimates for pipeline rehabilitation projects and in utilizing annual services contracts Assists in acquiring property easements and license agreements.
Assists in reviewing contractors invoices.
Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains utility locator, metal detector, survey equipment, gas detector, safety harness, and other tools and equipment.
Communicates supervisor, other city employees, contractors, property owners, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Additional Functions Performs other related duties as required.
