Chief Engineer

Job overview
Manage the engineering/maintenance operations of the hotel to ensure safety and comfort of hotel guests and colleagues.

Follow brand standards and/or local regulatory requirements.

Perform preventive and regular maintenance and repairs to all areas of the hotel.

Responsible for maintaining a clean and organised maintenance shop and for the security of hotel inventory and assets such as tools, supplies, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

Duties and responsibilities

Financial returns:


* Participate in the preparation of the annual departmental operating budget and financial plans.

Monitor budget and control expenses with a focus on energy management, preventative maintenance, and capital planning.


* Ensure the effective financial management of the maintenance department by setting maintenance budgets, capital works programs and engineering plans and ensuring that performance against there are regularly monitored and reviewed.  Responsible for the general cost control aspects of maintenance, the preparation of departmental cost budgets and their implementation and submission to management.


* Lead hotel renovations and other projects, negotiate contracts, and ensure timely completion of projects within budget.


* Contribute to the hotel’s profitability by ensuring the effective management of the buildings environmental controls and energy conservation systems.  Evaluate, control and record energy usage and implement and upgrade energy conservation systems.


* Ensure the effective financial management of the Capital Plan by setting realistic capital budgets, cash flows, capital works programs and equity asset plans and ensuring that performance against these are regularly monitored and reviewed.  Responsible for the general cost control aspects of each project, the preparation and submission of budget estimates to management and their successful implementation.

People:


* Work with Human Resources on manpower planning and management needs


* Contribute to the effectiveness of management decision making by representing the maintenance department at management meetings and staff meetings and by ensuring regular liaison with heads of other departments.


* Manage day-to-day staffing requirements, plan and assign work, and establish performance and development goals for team members.

Provide mentoring, coaching and regular feedback to help manage conflict and improve team member performance.


* Ensure a technically competent maintenance staff by selecting, training and developing a motivated, well-qualified maintenance team.  Carry out regular work sampling studies within the department and evaluate the performance and productivity of personnel.
