Fire Safety Specialist

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Riverside County Fire Department (RCFD) seeks Fire Safety Specialists for their Beaumont, Palm Desert, and Indio Office, however, this recruitment may be used to fill positions throughout Riverside County.

The Fire Safety Specialist will primarily be responsible for plan review, including entitlement and land use approval.

The incumbent will review plans ensuring safety protocol is followed and up to code.

The Fire Safety Specialist will also train and accompany inspectors on complicated inspections.

Completion of the California Office of the State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector series courses IA, IB, IC, and ID and 2A, 2B, 2C and 2B, and/or Plans examiner courses IA, IB, IC is highly desired.

Competitive candidates will know the fire code and code application and must have experience in plan review, field inspections, and annual state-mandated inspections.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Reviews, researches and evaluates fire protection plans and equipment for effectiveness in fire prevention and protection; recommends alternative and/or improved fire protection plans and devices.

• Studies and evaluates building and development plans and specifications for conformance with applicable laws, codes and regulations concerning fire protection and life safety.

• Assists in the preparation and updating of the Riverside County Master Fire Plan; analyzes community fire problems and develops improvement programs, determines the resolution of specialized fire prevention and fire protection problems.

• Reviews fire sprinkler system plans and fire protection equipment systems; determining water requirements for fire protection.

• Conduct special inspections and investigations of existing structures as it relates to fire codes.

• Reviews commercial, industrial, and multi-unit building plans and specifications for occupancy and structural requirements as it relates to fire code.

• Coordinates plan checking with other departments and makes recommendations relative to use, changes and adoption of codes, ordinances and departmental standards.

• Supervise the daily activities of Fire Prevention Technicians; interprets fire code and regulations relating to Fire Protection.
