Senior Accounting Specialist, Billing, Finance

Schedule This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with a minimum of three (3) days in-office based out of our West Sacramento office and two (2) days working remotely.

Summary We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Senior Accounting Specialist, Billing.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Finance and Accounting, this role is responsible for managing a variety of complex billing functions including membership renewals, professional services, conferences and events, and software as a service (SaaS) subscriptions, while ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with organizational policies.

The Senior Accounting Specialist, Billing supports key general ledger functions related to revenue recognition, deferred revenue reconciliations, and revenue accruals.

This role requires strong analytical skills, exceptional organizational and communication skills, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset.

This role will play a key part in implementing new billing and A/R automation by documenting processes, testing workflows, and recommending improvements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Manage billing for memberships, professional services, conferences and events, and software as a service (SaaS) subscriptions in accordance with policies and contract terms.

Manage cash applications and research and resolve payment exceptions.

Partner with the Director, Membership and all departments with billable programs and services to resolve past-due accounts and handle escalations with a member-focused approach.

Serve as a key user and process owner for billing and A/R systems, helping configure, test, and continuously improve automated workflows such as billing, dunning, and cash application.

Track and report on A/R metrics and aging trends, identifying root causes and recommending process improvements.

Support revenue recognition processes in accordance with GAAP through preparation of monthly accrued/deferred revenue schedules and related journal entries.

Assist with reconciliation of balance sheet accounts tied to billing revenue activity.

Maintain detailed supporting schedules for month-end close and audit purposes.

Work cross-functionally and engage professionally with staff, vendors, and members.

Support Finance leadership with special projects.

Maintain confidentiality, uphold organizational values, and promote a professional work environment.

Work collaboratively with staff to advise, train, and provide support on accounting-related tasks to achieve individual and team goals.
