Group Counselor - Orange County After School Apprentice | Chapel Hill - Carrboro YMCA

POSITION SUMMARY: In partnership with Durham Tech Early Childhood Apprentice Program, and under the supervision of the Youth Program Director, the Group Counselor Apprenticeis responsible forleading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants in the program.

Theyare responsible formanaging these functionsin accordance withthe stated mission, goals, and policiesestablishedby the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Job Schedulo: Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m.

to 5:30 p.m.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervisesand builds relationships witha group of elementaryand/or middle schoolstudents.Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentallyappropriateandconsistent with YMCA values.Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe,friendlyand challenging.Mentors and models responsible behavior while leadingchildren inthe program.Models andfacilitatesrelationship-building skills in all interactionsand maintains positiverelationships with campers, parents, schoolstaffand other YMCA staff.Adheres toYMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinarysituations, child abusepreventionand emergency management.Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of andleft in good, clean condition daily.Attends staff meetings andtrainings.Develops andmaintainscollaborative relationships with community organizations.

Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication withinareaof responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS: At least 18years of age.High School/GEDrequiredwithpreviousexperience working with children.Mustbe currentlyenrolled in Durham Techs Apprenticeship program and selected toparticipatebycollege administration guidelines.Must obtain BSAC Certification prior tohire.Other specific certifications and/or training may berequired.Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning andorganizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games,etc.Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.Multi-lingualdesired but notrequired.
