Utility Heavy Equipment Operator II

Nature of Work This is very responsible skilled work involving the operation of specialized and heavy motorized equipment and machinery utilized for various public services and utilities projects.

Activities associated with the job include operating equipment and machinery used for road installation and repair, installing and/or repairing utilities and removing debris from city streets and roadways.

Additional activities include assisting with debris and limbs, keeping streets and right of ways clear of obstructions and assisting with the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, drainage utilities and sidewalks.

Incumbents may also be required to perform a variety of activities associated with roadway construction and utilities projects including directing traffic and ensuring the safety of the public and co-workers.

Job responsibilities require experience operating heavy equipment and machinery utilized for public services and utility projects, good organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.

Job performance is evaluated daily by the Crew Leader, Assistant Utility Supervisor and/or Utility Supervisor through review of the safe and proper operation of heavy equipment and machinery, level of support provided for street maintenance and repair operations, compliance with operating policies and procedures, willingness to perform job assignments and observation of the activities performed on the job.

Illustrative Examples of Work -Operates the following equipment at an intermediate level of proficiency: backhoes, track hoes, jackhammers, bobcats, graders, rollers, dozers, tractors, boom trucks, dump trucks, front end loaders, paving machines, forklift, and other heavy equipment utilized for utility repair projects.

-Assists with the installation of drainage tile along roadways to ensure proper drainage and prevent erosion.

-Removes debris, trash, and dirt from highways, medians, right of ways, drainage ditches and other city property.

-Works as part of utilities crew in line and road repair, spreading gravel or digging ditches.

-Cuts down trees and heavy brush to clear right of ways when necessary.

-Puts up and moves signs to warn traffic of utility/road construction projects.

-Makes minor repairs and adjustments to maintain the proper operation of utility equipment and machinery.

-Assists in the removal of snow from roadways.

-Shovels and rakes hot or cold mix to repair potholes and small patches of roadway when necessary.

-Directs traffic around highway maintenance operations such as mowing, paving, and road/utility repair activities when necessary.

-Operates equipment as a member of a crew involved in water and sewer line installation, street and drainage maintenance and repair work; helps repair curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
