What We're Looking For:

Michael Baker is seeking a Transportation Technical Manager to join our Chicago, IL team.

This leadership role is ideal for a transportation professional with strong technical expertise, project delivery experience, and a passion for mentoring teams.

The successful candidate will lead the delivery of roadway and transportation projects for a variety of public-sector clients across Illinois and the Midwest, while supporting business development, client relationships, and technical excellence.

Experience with roadway design, transportation infrastructure, and project management is essential.

What You'll Do:


* Lead the technical delivery of roadway and transportation projects from planning through final design.


* Oversee project quality through QA/QC reviews of plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates.


* Manage project teams, schedules, budgets, and staff utilization to ensure successful project execution.


* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.


* Develop scopes of work, fee estimates, and support proposal pursuits.


* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, including IDOT, counties, municipalities, and other transportation agencies.


* Support business development efforts and identify opportunities for growth within the Chicago market.


* Participate in professional organizations, industry events, and client meetings to strengthen Michael Baker's presence in the region.


* Foster a collaborative team environment focused on quality, innovation, and professional development.

What You Need to Succeed:


* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.


* 10+ years of transportation engineering experience.


* Professional Engineer (PE) license required.


* Demonstrated experience leading roadway or transportation design projects.


* Strong knowledge of IDOT design standards, project delivery processes, and transportation engineering best practices.


* Excellent leadership, client management, communication, and team-building skills.


* Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications


* Experience serving as a Technical Manager, Project Manager, or Department Lead within a consulting environment.


* Familiarity with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, and other transportation design software.
