Bandmaster / Music Teacher
Position Title: Bandmaster / Music Teacher Reports to: Academic Dean Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: To direct and manage Hargrave Military Academy's instrumental music program, including the marching and ceremonial bands and the Pipe and Drum Corps.
To provide classroom instruction in music from beginner through advanced levels for both musicians and non-musicians, including music appreciation, music theory, and music history as appropriate.
To teach additional courses within the Bandmaster's areas of academic expertise as assigned by the Academic Dean.
To develop cadets through music by emphasizing discipline, teamwork, confidence, leadership, responsibility, character, and academic excellence in alignment with the Academy's mission and values.
To recruit, develop, and retain cadet musicians and create opportunities for students of varying skill levels to participate successfully in the music program.
To coordinate closely with the Commandant and Military Department to provide musical support for military reviews, parades, Corps formations, ceremonies, and other Academy traditions.
To establish and coordinate rehearsal schedules that support academic, military, athletic, and campus-life commitments.
To coordinate on-campus and off-campus performances with appropriate Academy stakeholders and the school calendar, including regional parades, festivals, Highland Games, and other annual events.
To coordinate with the Chaplain to provide appropriate musical support for chapel services and special faith-based events.
As scheduling and program needs permit, to provide leadership or support for chapel band, pep band, choir, and other musical ensembles.
To prepare cadets and ensembles for major Academy events, family and academic programs, athletic events, military ceremonies, community appearances, and other performances as assigned.
To maintain accountability for instruments, music, uniforms, and related support equipment, ensuring proper inventory, storage, care, and distribution.
To identify equipment and program needs; coordinate repairs, replacements, and purchases; and maintain the music library and other program resources.
To develop and manage the music program budget, including equipment, repairs, uniforms, supplies, transportation, and travel needs such as charter bus expenses.
To plan and coordinate travel and logistical requirements for off-campus performances and events, ensuring appropriate supervision and adherence to Academy policies.
To maintain a structured, safe, and disciplined learning environment and enforce Academy expectations and the Cadet Code of Conduct.
To serve as an active member of campus life through advising, mentoring, and supporting cadets beyond the classroom and rehearsal setting.
To collaborate effectively with Academics, the Military Department, Athletics, the Chaplain, Campus Life, and other departments to advance the goals of the Academy.
