Planner I -Part-Time - Long Beach, CA What We're Looking For
Michael Baker International is seeking an energetic, motivated, and detail-oriented Planner I to join our Planning Practice and support public agency clients throughout the Greater Los Angeles area.

This entry-level role is ideal for a planning professional who is eager to learn, develop technical expertise, and gain hands-on experience in municipal planning and development services.

The Planner I will assist public agencies with front counter operations, land use entitlement processing, permit review, public outreach, and a variety of planning functions.

The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service to both clients and the public.
What You'll Do


* Provide zoning, land use, and planning-related information to the public, developers, and stakeholders.


* Support day-to-day operations of public agency permit centers.


* Conduct project site visits and gather information required to process planning applications.


* Review development proposals for compliance with General Plans, Zoning Ordinances, Specific Plans, design guidelines, and applicable development standards.


* Process minor land use entitlements and administrative permits, including:
+ Conditional Use Permits (CUPs)
+ Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
+ Sign permits
+ Plan checks


* Assist in preparing staff reports for Planning Commission and City Council meetings.


* Support the preparation of resolutions, ordinances, and CEQA-related documentation.


* Coordinate public noticing requirements, including publication, mailing, and posting of notices.


* Distribute project documents to outside agencies and stakeholders as required.


* Assist with scheduling and facilitating public workshops, public hearings, and EIR scoping meetings.


* Prepare and file notices with the State Clearinghouse and County Clerk offices.


* Conduct land use and special planning studies as assigned.


* Assist with maintaining and updating municipal codes and ordinance amendments.


* Provide additional planning support and related duties as assigned by client agencies.

What You Need to Succeed


* Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, or a related field.


* Minimum of 1 year of relevant planning experience.


* Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.


* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.


* Commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work products.


* Ability to quickly learn new policies, procedures, software, and planning regulations.
