Laboratory Manager, Chemistry and Chemical Biology (fixed-term)

Job Description

Working under the supervision of the Department Chair of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing and executing the operations and instruction of lab facilities used in the undergraduate and graduate chemistry and chemical biology education courses and providing needed support for the chemistry and chemical biology faculty research lab facilities.

The Laboratory Manager will work closely with the associate department chairs and faculty members for the lab facilities to fulfill their role as part of an educational resource and research capabilities to the department.  The Laboratory Manager acts as a bridge between faculty, staff, and students to ensure top-level performance, safety, and innovation within all laboratory environments.

This is a fixed-term position, up to 35 hours per week, with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027.  This position will be four (4) days on campus and one (1) day working from home.  The current on campus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lab Operations & Support (up to 15 hours per week):  : Manage the day-to-day operations of biology teaching and research labs including, but not limited to:

·       Purchasing, organizing, and setting up course materials, reagents, and equipment, as well as coordinating seamlessly with instructors and Teaching Assistants (TAs) to execute lab transitions and student research. 

·       Overseeing the distribution and return of gas containers.

Teaching Innovation (up to 10 hours per week)

·       Partner with faculty to develop and pilot modern, cost-effective teaching methods for large-enrollment biology lab courses, aligning course content with the department's strategic vision.

·        Simplify experimental procedures for first-year students, assess learning outcomes to improve practices, and implement digital tools like Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) and Benchling to modernize data collection and reagent organization.

Safety & Maintenance (up to 10 hours per week)

·       Act as the visible leader of a "safety first" culture, collaborating with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to ensure compliance and conduct annual safety training for instructional staff. 

·       Coordinate with campus facilities regarding day-to-time maintenance, emergency responses, and modernization projects, while assisting with annual capital asset inventories and safety inspections.

Qualifications


* Required Education:  Master’s degree in biology or chemical biology discipline


* Preferred Education:  Doctoral degree


* Required Experience:  Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in an undergraduate and/or graduate biology lab-based setting


* Preferred Experience:  Minimum of 5 years of experience
