Senior Structural Engineer - Technical Manager

What We're Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer - Technical Manager to join our Federal Services team in Pittsburgh.

This is a key leadership opportunity for an experienced structural professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality design solutions while building and mentoring high-performing teams.

In this role, you will lead a team of structural engineers, EITs, and designers, providing technical expertise and oversight across a diverse portfolio of building projects.

You'll partner closely with the National Structural Engineering Lead and other discipline managers to balance workloads, drive project performance, and ensure consistency in design excellence across the team.

You will serve as a trusted technical leader-overseeing complex projects, performing quality control reviews, and acting as Engineer of Record when required.

Additional responsibilities include developing scopes of work, preparing fee proposals, and supporting targeted business development efforts.

What You'll Do


* Lead the preparation and review of complex structural design deliverables, including studies, calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications.


* Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) as required; perform design checks, internal technical reviews (ITRs), and quality control of team deliverables.


* Provide clear direction, redlines, and technical guidance to EITs and BIM designers.


* Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including defining scope, developing man-hour estimates, and ensuring adherence to MBI standards and protocols.


* Support construction activities by reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and addressing field issues and corrective actions.


* Collaborate across disciplines and project teams, participating in meetings, tracking action items, and ensuring effective communication.


* Engage with clients to support project delivery and contribute to business development efforts; build strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and repeat business.


* Conduct periodic site visits to document findings and support project oversight.


* Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities


* Provide mentorship, technical oversight, and performance feedback to less experienced staff.


* Plan, assign, and monitor work to ensure quality standards, deadlines, and project requirements are consistently met.
