Position SummaryThe Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and inspection of emergency response vehicles and associated equipment.
This role ensures that police, fire, EMS, public safety, and government fleet vehicles remain operational, safe, and compliant with applicable manufacturer, agency, and regulatory standards.
The technician works on vehicle electrical systems, communications equipment, emergency lighting, sirens, mobile computing systems, prisoner transport equipment, and specialized upfitting components.
Key Responsibilities · Install and configure emergency vehicle equipment, including warning lights, sirens, radios, antennas, cameras, computer docking stations, prisoner transport systems, gun locks, and specialty equipment.
· Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and electronic issues affecting vehicle operations and emergency equipment functionality.
Along with decommissioning emergency vehicles.
· Perform preventative maintenance inspections to ensure vehicle readiness, reliability, and compliance with agency standards.
· Read and interpret wiring diagrams, technical manuals, schematics, and installation instructions.
· Conduct troubleshooting of vehicle electrical systems, power distribution systems, and communication equipment.
· Install and terminate wiring harnesses, connectors, relays, switches, circuit protection devices, and related components.
· Perform quality control inspections on completed installations and repairs.
· Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specifications, federal regulations, safety standards, and organizational policies.
· Maintain accurate service records, installation documentation, and inventory accountability.
· Coordinate with fleet managers, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, EMS personnel, vendors, and manufacturers to resolve technical issues.
· Test and verify functionality of emergency lighting, sirens, radios, GPS systems, mobile data terminals, and other mission-critical equipment.
· Support vehicle commissioning, decommissioning, and fleet modernization initiatives.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to OSHA and workplace safety standards.
· Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications · Experience in automotive electrical systems, vehicle upfitting, fleet maintenance, or emergency vehicle installation.
· Knowledge of 12V and 24V electrical systems.
· Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
