Role Summary:

Civil Engineer III: Assignments require independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in order to make adaptations and modifications to existing plans or specifications.

Performance at this level requires a professional civil engineer, competent in conventional aspects of civil and traffic engineering.

May coordinate the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

Civil Engineer IV: The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work results from progressive experience.

Assignments require the application of intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.

Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the City in public meetings and conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work.

Requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of sciences and disciplines.

Coordinates the work of consultants, contractors and staff assigned to the project.

Essential Duties:


* Conducts comprehensive reviews of private development construction plans, technical reports, and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and engineering principles.

Identifies and resolves design and construction issues, and independently coordinates project activities with consultants, contractors, developers, and other stakeholders throughout project planning and construction.


* Serves as a primary point of contact with the public, developers, consultants, and contractors, providing technical guidance and resolving complex project-related issues.

Exercises independent judgment in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments, analyzes technical information to develop practical solutions, and performs most work with minimal supervision.

Receives guidance on unusual or complex matters and obtains supervisory approval for major project recommendations and proposed plans.



* Placement at the Civil Engineer III or Civil Engineer IV level will be based on the candidate's qualifications, licensure, and experience.

Education, Training and Experience Required at Entry:


* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.


* Minimum of five (5) to eight (8) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
