Position Overview

The Speech-Language Pathologist evaluates and treats residents with communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders, collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary team members, and maintains accurate clinical documentation.

The SLP also participates in care planning, staff education, and quality improvement initiatives to support optimal resident outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Resident Assessment & Treatment


* Evaluate residents to determine speech therapy needs, functional limitations, and rehabilitation potential in accordance with physician orders and facility policies.


* Develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans to improve communication, cognition, swallowing function, and overall independence.


* Provide skilled speech-language pathology services to residents in accordance with established plans of care.


* Monitor resident progress and modify treatment plans as appropriate to maximize outcomes.


* Recommend and facilitate the ordering of adaptive equipment and other resources to support resident independence and safety.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration


* Communicate regularly with physicians, nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, residents, and families regarding progress, goals, and discharge planning.


* Participate in Resident Care Conferences, Utilization Review meetings, Rehabilitation meetings, and other interdisciplinary discussions as needed.


* Assist the nursing department with training Restorative Aides and other staff members regarding communication and swallowing-related interventions.


* Collaborate with rehabilitation and nursing teams to ensure continuity of care.

Education & Training


* Educate residents, families, and caregivers regarding treatment goals, home exercise programs, maintenance programs, aspiration precautions, swallowing safety strategies, and communication techniques.


* Provide in-services and educational programs for facility staff as needed.


* Serve as a clinical resource for staff regarding speech-language pathology services and best practices.
