Lecturer in Statistics (Part-time)

Cornell College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa, is seeking a Lecturer in Math and Statistics for three sections of introductory statistics beginning October 2026.  Applicants may be considered for one course, multiple courses, or all 3 courses.

A Ph.D.

in statistics or a closely related field is preferred; candidates with at least a master’s degree in statistics or a closely related field will also be considered.  Experience in teaching introductory statistics is strongly preferred.

Course and term dates:

Because Cornell utilizes a block schedule for its courses, you would teach this one course full time during each of the three four-week sessions.

STA 201: Statistical Methods I (Block 3: 10/19/26 - 11/11/26; Block 4: 11/16/26 - 12/16/26; Block 6: 2/08/27 - 3/03/27).  This course serves as the introductory statistics course for all majors at the college that require statistics.  It covers collecting data (an introduction to both observational studies and experiments), descriptive statistics, and inference for one and two proportions and one and two means.  We cover inference using both normal/t-based methods and using simulation (randomization tests and bootstrap confidence intervals).  The software used for descriptive methods and normal/t methods is JMP.  Modern inference (bootstrap confidence intervals and randomization tests) are done using a book author designed website (www.lock5stat.com/StatKey).

The college encourages interdisciplinary interests among its faculty and the development of teaching strategies that capitalize on our distinctive academic calendar.

One Course At A Time allows us the freedom to take students off-campus without impinging on other course commitments.

In addition, class size is limited to 24 students, and upper-level courses are often smaller.
