Summer Help - Technical Services - 2nd Shift

This is a temporary summer help position.

A great opportunity for students looking to make extra money over the summer. 

The Lab Technician role within the Technical Services department is responsible for testing the iron samples used when pouring molds.

These iron samples are sent to the Lab from the production floor through a tubing system.

The Lab Technician takes the iron sample writes the time on it and then grinds it with grinder tools until the sample is smooth.

Then another Lab Technician inspects the sample under a microscope to ensure the iron is melting properly.

 The Lab Technician is also responsible for testing the sand that is used to make molds to ensure the consistency and chemistry are correct.

The Lab Technician responsible for testing the sand operates a jeep to go to each machine to collect samples.

Lab Technicians will be rotating on a daily basis.

 This role is a technical position however does not require previous experience.

The position could offer the opportunity for cross training and experience in a variety of tasks within the technical services area (Certification and Test bars).

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Sand

Collect sand samples from 4 Molding lines every 2 hours.

Perform the following test from each molding line

Compactability

Methylene Blue

Moisture

Wet Tensile

Green Compression Strength

Split Tensile

Dry Compression Strength

pH

Permeability

Sand Sieve Analysis

LOI

Washed LOI

Core Strength (P2)

Core LOI

Paint Solids (P3)

Maintain Sand Test results in program Infinity QA

Chemistry

Retrieve tube with LECO pin and spectrometer sample

Writes the sample source ID and time on the back of the spectrometer sample

Prepares the spectrometer sample and the LECO pin

Grind the spectro sample

Break the LECO pin into smaller pieces

Test using the following equipment:

Spectrometer

Magnesium, Silicon, Copper, Chromium, Aluminum, Manganese, Vanadium, Antimony

LECO 

Carbon

Microstructural

Writes the sample source ID and time on the back of the spectrometer sample on the microlug

Prepares the micro lug (grinding and polishing)

Nodularity Rating using a microscope 

Rotates on all 3 positions, every day the lab tech will be doing a different task (sand, chemistry or microstructure)

Basic computer use

High attention to detail must

Responsible for machine lock out/tag out

Read and interpret mold plans

Read and interpret work instructions and procedures

Able to verify and calibrate the spectrometer and the LECO machine per procedures. 

Education/Experience Requirements:

No previous experience required, we will train you!  

No educational requirements

Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time

Must actively engage in safe working practices

Must be able to tolerate warm working conditions and a loud environment

Must be comfortable working in small spaces

Must be comfortable working directly with molten iron

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Must be at least 18...
