Job Summary
Under the guidance of the Chief Building Inspector, inspects new, existing and renovated construction of a wide range of structures and buildings to ensure compliance with Cook County Building Codes and the Cook County Zoning Ordinance at various locations throughout the County.
Ensures that such construction, additions and alterations present no threat to the safety, health and general well-being of the public throughout unincorporated properties, suburbs, forest preserve, townships and villages.
Provides information to the public regarding building, zoning and signage ordinances.
Communicates codes and ordinances with the general public, construction trades and on-site contractors through personal, electronic communication and telephone.
Performs plan reviews, office/permit processing and attends other meetings as required.
Issues citations when violations occur and provides testimony to the Office of the State's Attorney upon request.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• Possession of a High School Diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certification is required.
• Five (5) years of full-time work experience in building construction and inspection with code compliance experience is required.
• Valid driver's license with proof of insurance is required.
• Possession of a current International Code Council (ICC) Certification(s) including ICC Residential and Commercial Inspector Certification OR obtain certifications within the first year of employment is required.
This position is considered a safety-sensitive position.
Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

*Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by either the World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
