Head Lifeguard

Ensures the overall safety of guests in the aquatic area while on duty.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE: CPR and First Aid; knowledge of departmental rules concerning the area in which assigned; and of Lifeguard philosophies, policies and procedures; teaching methods and techniques.
SKILL: Public relations skills; demonstrated skill in operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
ABILITY: Prevent accidents; remain calm in emergency situations; work with little or no supervision; analyze and correct facility safety hazards; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Plan, organize, instruct and supervise the assigned program.

Deal tactfully with the public, sufficient strength to make rescues or move 50lb bags or buckets of chemicals; stand for extended time periods.

Ability to meet criteria as described in Working Environment and Physical Demands section of this document.
TRAINING: American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard.
EXPERIENCE: Previous aquatics experience, pool maintenance and swim instruction preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:


* Assign guards as conditions warrant to meet required lifeguard to patron ratios; insuring cleaning, maintenance of aquatic areas are performed; test and make adjustments to water chemistry to meet health codes; keep daily records on water chemistry, attendance, maintenance cleaning and current inventory of pool supplies; requests new supplies as needed.


* Provide excellence in customer service.

Deal with customer concerns/problems in a friendly and professional manner.


* Enforce all City policies, pool rules, and regulations involving the operation of the pool.

Assist the Aquatics Supervisor in staff training.

Responsible for setting a good example for all aquatic employees in conduct, dress and manners.


* Conduct routine safety checks of equipment and staff; ensure all paperwork, i.e., course records, accident reports, etc., are completed accurately and in a timely manner.


* Continuously scan pools for patrons in distress, enforce all rules and policies, clean and maintain facility; perform rescues and administer First Aid according to standards as needed; assist with swim lessons.

Respond quickly to emergencies; acts as problem solver between students/instructor or guard/patrons.


* Assist with daily operations of a boathouse, follow protocol set forth by the City; including but not limited to assisting patrons in and out of paddleboats; determining appropriate weather conditions for safe operation; using a jet ski to assist patrons back to boathouse during times of adverse conditions; labor intensive duties such as loading and unloading of paddle boats...
