Position Title: USDA Forest Service Trails Technician - AmeriCorps 

Conservation Legacy Program: Southwest Conservation Corps - Four Corners, Durango

Purpose:

This AmeriCorps program partners with the USDA Forest Service staff at local field offices throughout southern Colorado.

This AmeriCorps position is under direct mentorship and technical guidance of the Dolores Ranger District with additional management, support, and administration from Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC).

Forest Service works in collaboration with local communities and partners to carry out its mission to sustain the health, multi-use, and productivity of the Nation’s forest and grasslands to the meet the needs of present and future generations.

The values instilled through this mission are service, interdependence, conservation, and safety.

 

The Recreation Department Trails and Wilderness Program is responsible for maintaining approximately 600 miles of trail on the Dolores Ranger District.

Maintaining trails to Forest Service standards provide the community and visitors from across the country with quality trail-based recreation experiences, while also mitigating potential negative impacts to the land and environment associated with high use activities.

The goal is to foster quality and accessible recreation opportunities on the forest for current and future generations.

This AmeriCorps position will be integrated into a three-to-six-person trail crew performing trail maintenance including trail clearing, trail reconstruction, signage and engaging with public contacts.

Trail maintainence projects require a high functioning team environment with a positive culture as well as individuals to be reliable and engaged.

Trail projects are a trade, and it takes time to build up the necessary skills for it to become a career path.

Individual Placements (IPs) will get the opportunity to engage with members of the agency who will foster an environment with mentorship and developmental opportunities throughout their term.

 

Description of Duties:


* Perform trail maintenance projects that follow policies and protocols in alignment with the Forest Service standards and expectations


* Utilize trail maintenance tools such as chainsaws, crosscut saws, axes, pulaskis, shovels etc.

to complete trail maintenance projects safely in sometimes remote environments with strenuous terrain and challenging weather conditions


* Restore downed and broken trail and informational signs


* Perform field-based trail projects effectively with a crew
