Writing Studio Director

Cornell College invites applications for the position of Writing Studio Director.

The studio director is responsible for the operation of the Dungy Writing Studio.

The position consults with students in writing in the disciplines; collaborates with faculty to support the development of writing skills and entry into disciplinary discourse with upper-level students; and trains and supervises student writing consultants.

This is a 10-month position with working dates from August 1 to May 31.

Duties & Responsibilities


* Consults with students in writing and study skills and serves as a referral resource for students seeking academic assistance.


* Serves as co-teacher and consultant with faculty members and librarians for writing in advanced courses.


* Hires, trains, supervises, and schedules student writing consultants.

This includes (but is not limited to) conducting two training sessions per month, assigning and evaluating training essays and exercises, observing student conferences, and providing one-on-one assistance/mentoring.


* Develops and teaches writing skills in workshops and other formats, working both individually and in collaboration with appropriate offices and organizations on campus.


* Collaborates with appropriate faculty committees as requested.


* Tracks Studio usage by maintaining WCOnline.

Updates faculty and appropriate staff regarding students' progress.


* Coordinates writing support for international students, working in collaboration with the Office of Intercultural Life.


* Creates and updates content for the Dungy Writing Studio web page.

Promotes Studio and Studio activities through social media, monthly newsletters, and other outreach methods.


* Develops, revises, and distributes materials on writing and learning.


* Maintains knowledge in the field.


* Conducts special projects and performs other duties as directed by the Director of the Library and Center for Teaching and Learning or the Provost.


* Attends library staff meetings and works collegially in the context of the library program.

Qualifications and Education Requirements


* M.A.

in Rhetoric, English, or related field required. 


* Three to five years of teaching experience is strongly preferred.
