Mechanical Engineering Intern (Design)
Job Description:
Under the direct supervision and mentorship of members of the Engineering Staff, the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Intern undertakes a variety of on-going activities and assigned projects at varying levels of professional complexity requiring knowledge within their mechanical engineering college major.
The ME Intern works as a member of the Engineering team in support of contracted tasks including documentation, design, modeling, analysis, fabrication, and test activities.
The ME Intern will interact directly with multidiscipline professionals in the planning and implementation of assigned projects.
The Engineering Internship is a developmental position and is restricted to college students whose major and personal interests are aligned with the role of the engineering organization and hiring department.
It is the goal of the internship program to expose the student to the technical business environment to better prepare the student to make informed continued education and career decisions while providing value to ESA.
Start May/June 2026
Responsibilities:
* Participate in technical projects and programs designed to develop personal and professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the Engineering Department.
* Perform various duties related to the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department based on area of specialty.
* Examples of typical assignments include:
+ System and subsystem analysis and requirements specification.
+ System and subsystem modeling and performance analysis.
+ Design of mechanical components to engineering specifications
+ Fabrication and debug of prototype mechanical hardware.
+ Develop and conduct mechanical tests
+ Component investigations with suppliers and subcontractors.
+ Organization and correlation of test data in electronic format utilizing spreadsheets, word processing and database software.
+ Support manufacturing personnel for programs in production.
+ Interact directly with colleagues and other internal or external resources in the planning of assignments and completion of projects.
+ Ability to conduct research, create and generate required documentation including design reports, assembly procedures, bills-of-material, and test procedures based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action.
Qualifications:
* High School diploma and current enrollment in an accredited technical Bachelor's degree program.
Satisfactory completion of at least 2-3 years of college in an engineering major.
* Requires excellent written and oral communication skills
* The ability to understand and follow complex, detailed instructions, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
* Proficient computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite
* Familiarity with basic shop tools and/or machine equipment
