Victim Witness Legal Assistant

Job Description

WAGE: $20.84 - DOE

DEPARTMENT: Attorney

PERSONNEL STATUS: Part Time

BENEFITS: No Benefits

JOB OVERVIEW:

Under the general guidance and direction of supervising attorneys and staff, performs legal work related to the prosecution of criminal cases.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Gathers and electronically processes discovery information utilizing a variety of computer programs such as Justware, Sharefile, Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook, and many others.

May generate a variety of legal correspondence, documents or reports within the case management system requiring judgment as to accuracy and completeness; follows paper work and cases through to completion.

Will obtain and upload information into different systems.

Will process information, perform redactions and arrange electronic delivery of information from different system to various parties.

Answers telephones and assists individuals entering the office; responds to basic procedural questions.

Reviews and makes correct determinations regarding the handling of incoming mail.

Prepares introductory letters, Victim Impact Statements, and information for victims and mails or emails those items to them.

Provides updated information to witnesses about the court process.

May schedule appointments for Victim/Witness Coordinators and Attorneys.

May attend meetings if necessary.

Collect and organize documentation received from victims and files the information in the appropriate system.

Contacts law enforcement agencies, court personnel, witnesses, attorneys, etc.

to request information and follow up on receipt of the information.

Process discovery for cases, request and obtain information needed for cases.

Maintains case records in our case management systems in accordance with office policies and procedures.

Operates a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with all Utah laws and regulations.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent and one (1) year of college level course work in areas related to secretarial duties; OR

Experience: Graduate from high school or equivalent and one (1) year of progressively increasing responsible experience as a Legal Secretary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA):

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Working knowledge of legal terminology and procedures, court systems and documents, as well as the ability to advise the public as needed regarding basic legal issues and court processes.

Knowledge of the Bureau of Criminal Identification and their systems also helpful.
