Environmental & Social Due Diligence Associate
The team's primary mandate is to ensure in-scope transactions meet the firm's Environmental and Social Risk Policy Framework requirements, thereby helping to safeguard the firm's reputation.
Financial products covered include equity and debt underwriting, loans and credit facilities, and M&A activity, as well as sustainable finance products, including green, social, sustainable and sustainability linked loans / bonds.
Sector coverage includes power, metals and mining, oil and gas, soft commodities, among others.
Positioned in the first line of defense, the individual will be partner with a bankers and deal teams across the Global Banking franchise, as well as interfacing with other key stakeholders, e.g., Nature and Social Risk (second line of defense), Legal, Compliance, and with clients in an advisory capacity.
As an Environmental & Social Due Diligence Associate on the Global Banking team, you will be responsible for assessing clients and deals, and leading strategic initiatives with support from the rest of the team.
You should be a self-starter, able to articulate your thoughts clearly, and have excellent attention to detail.
This role may involve limited travel and offers an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to a broad spectrum of E&S / ESG risks across multiple asset classes, industries, and geographies.
Job Responsibilities:
* Evaluate E&S requirements for relevant transactions
* Analyze the E&S profile and performance of clients
* Support bankers and deal teams by advising clients on E&S / ESG issues
* Serve as an E&S subject matter expert and collaborate with key internal stakeholders on E&S topics
* Enhance the training of bankers and deal teams in E&S risk assessment
* Contribute to the team's strategic planning, objectives, and key results
* Engage with a wide range of internal stakeholders to influence the firm's broader E&S agenda
* Keeping abreast on a range of environmental issues that affect our clients including forestry, agriculture, climate change, carbon markets, energy efficiency and renewable energy
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills:
* Relevant experience (4+ years) in environmental and social risk / ESG / sustainability, ideally within the financial services industry, consultancy, or key sectors such as oil and gas, mining, power, and commodities
* A university degree in a pertinent field (e.g., environmental studies, sustainability, geography, development economics, or finance)
* Ability to convey information clearly, accurately and succinctly
* Strong client focus and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work under time pressure
* Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
* Excellent working knowledge of the Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, WB EHS Guidelines and other industry best practices for environmental and social risk management
