Court Clerk

The Court Clerk assists with the daily operations of the Lafayette Municipal Court, performing a variety of technical and professional duties.

This position requires attention to detail, multi-tasking, and communication with internal and external customers.

The work includes, but is not limited to, data entry, preparation and maintenance of court files, processing motions, bond processing, CCIC entry and searches, cashiering, significant public interaction, and work as a courtroom clerk.

Court clerks work as a team, and all are required to cross train and demonstrate proficiency on a wide variety of desk duties.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE: Basic office methods, simple math calculations and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Must be able to learn court vernacular and a variety of procedures of the municipal court.

SKILL: Skilled in operation of equipment necessary to perform the duties of the job.

Typing speed and 10-key with accuracy sufficient to perform assigned tasks.

Strong customer service skills appropriate to the court process.

ABILITY: Exercise independent judgment, evaluate situations and make decisions using strong problem-solving skills, establish priorities, adjust to shifts in priorities, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and others.

TRAINING: High School Diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of general clerical experience, preferably in courts or records management, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


* Experience working in a court or legal environment.


* Experience working with the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) and OpenFox.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:


* Communicates court policies and procedures to the public; answers incoming phone calls/emails.


* Interacts with the public to resolve difficult and sensitive situations.

Maintains confidentiality when required.


* Performs cashiering duties, accepting payments for fines and fees, balancing daily cash receipts.


* Processes citations, subpoenas, and other court documents.


* Maintains records in accordance with established court procedures.


* Enters data pertaining to pleadings, dispositions and community service requirements.


* Manages bonds received by the Court.


* Explains paperwork to defendants and sets return dates.


* Confirms community service hours completed by defendants, tracks completion of classes or other requirements related to sentencing conditions imposed by the Court.


* Conducts check-in on court days for defendants, attorneys, jurors, witnesses, interpreters, etc.
