Junior Engineer

The County of Riverside's TLMA Transportation Department has multiple opportunities for a Junior Engineer in the Project Development Division located in Riverside, CA.

The Junior Engineer will be responsible for research and coordination between the Project Management team and various technical units and/or agencies.

The incumbent will also be expected to coordinate with various design consultants as needed.

Incumbents will be required to prepare detailed notes/summaries/status updates for distribution to Transportation Division Managers and updates to Transportation Department websites.

As an entry-level position in the Project Development Division, successful applicants should be able to perform various office and field tasks under close supervision needed to deliver a project Plans, Specifications, and Estimate (PS&E) package.

The most competitive candidates will have experience utilizing the full Microsoft Office Suite, MicroStation V8i or later, Inroads V8i or later, and will have previous work experience with Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications.

Candidates who have successfully completed classes in transportation, structural, and/or roadway design are encouraged to apply.

Candidates in possession of a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) are highly desired.

The Junior Engineer is the entry level classification in the professional engineer series and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position.

Incumbents receive office and field assignments of a less complex nature on a training basis.

Incumbents are expected to develop a variety of engineering skills and abilities and are gradually given more difficult and responsible assignments.

The Junior Engineer is a natural progression underfill for the Assistant Engineer.

Incumbents are eligible to promote to Assistant Engineer upon successful completion of their probationary period, which would include a satisfactory performance evaluation and any additional qualification requirements.

The Transportation Department is responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges, and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.Examples of Essential Duties (may include but not limited to)
• Assist in the design and planning of public works improvements, facilities and structures by preparing plans, profiles and cross-sections; make quantity estimates and horizontal and vertical curve alignment computations and establish tentative gradelines; compute earthwork and design simple hydraulic structures; may participate in inspections during construction.

• Record locations on maps, reduce field notes and sketch proposed layouts for various installations.

• Prepare hydrologic and/or traffic flow studies; conduct field investigations as needed.

• Assist in conducting water quality and water rights studies or air quality and emission modeling oriented studies.
