Nurse Extern - Operating Room

The Nurse Extern will have the ability to build upon previous coursework and clinical practicums to combine the scientific process, evidence, clinical judgement, and creative problem solving to support clinical decision making across care continuum.

During the program, Nurse Externs will assist with general activities of the patient care unit and assist the health care team with performance of patient care activities, under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse.

At the conclusion of the program, Nurse Externs will have the opportunity to transition into a Registered Nurse role.

Progression of Role: The Nurse Extern will have the opportunity to progress through the roles of Nursing Assistant, Unit Clerk, Patient Safety Companion, and interview for the Nurse Residency.

If accepted into the Residency, upon graduation, the Nurse Resident will work with members of the Nursing Professional Development Team, preceptors, and Unit Leadership to review skills outlined in the Registered Nurse Orientation Checklist, complete simulation experiences, and review didactic content.

This primary position at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware may include opportunities at the Nemours Children's Health Surgery Centers in Pennsylvania (PA) and New Jersey (NJ) to optimize learning opportunities and capitalize on available preceptor resources.

This position may require periodic rotation to Nemours Ambulatory Surgery Facilities in PA and NJ.

Travel is compensated based on organizational policy.

This position requires current Pennsylvania (PA) Clearances to include PA FBI Fingerprint Report, PA Criminal Background Record, and PA Child Abuse Clearance.

This position requires working shifts aligned with the needs of the department, preceptor availability, and the assigned FTE of the nurse extern.

Responsibilities:

Ensures all equipment and supplies are adequately stocked and charged based on departmental needs.

Ensures a clean and safe patient care unit.

Assists patients with activities of daily life (bath, feed, play, etc.) and provides other patient care as directed.

Demonstrates knowledge to effectively relay information from collaborating departments as it relates to patient care.

Contacts pharmacy, dietary, and other departments as designated by the Registered Nurse.

Collects patient specimens (blood, urine, stool, other per policy), paying close attention to patient safety, comfort, and accuracy of information.

Proficiently demonstrate proper and accurate use of Hospital Information Systems as required for patient care, (e.g.

documenting vital signs and patient care activities.)

Transports patients and deliver report, supplies, etc., to other patient units or facility locations as needed.

Courteously and professionally covers patient care unit front desk as needed.
