Hazardous Waste Inspector I

The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County.

A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies.

The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources seeks a Hazardous Waste Inspector I to support multiple locations including Beaumont (Lamb Canyon), Moreno Valley (Badlands) or Corona (El Sobrante).

The selected candidate will be responsible for performing load check inspections on waste loads at landfills and solid waste transfer stations, including those generated from residential, commercial, and industrial sources.

Additional duties include transporting hazardous waste and completing the necessary shipping documentation, categorizing and packaging hazardous materials, and educating the public on proper hazardous waste disposal options and acceptance policies.

The incumbent will also initiate hazardous waste incident notifications as needed, based on the present hazards, waste types, quantities, conditions, and instability.

Also, will maintain and perform minor repairs on safety and emergency equipment, along with other duties as required.

Schedule: 4/10, from 6:00 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m., including Saturdays (subject to change based on department needs).

The incumbent will receive differential pay for Saturday shifts.

This position offers a dynamic work schedule with the added benefit of additional compensation for weekend hours.

Competitive candidates will possess:


* Six months of experience working in a solid waste and/or hazardous waste environment performing visual, verbal and/or physical screening, diversion of waste types and prevention of hazardous waste disposal.


* Experience working at an Antifreeze, Battery, Oil and Paint (ABOP) facility.


* Some knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing hazardous waste.


* Experience working with household hazardous waste.


* Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook email.


* Ability to read and write inspection reports and incident reports.

The Hazardous Waste Inspector I is the entry level classification in the Hazardous Waste Inspector series and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position.

Incumbents receive formal on-the job training in the techniques and procedures essential to conducting waste load inspections, investigations in the enforcement of hazardous and prohibited waste regulations and in solving environmental problems related to hazardous waste.

Incumbents may be promoted to the Hazardous Waste Inspector II level after acquiring the required education and experience and a satisfactory work performance evaluation.
