Librarian II - Programs & Outreach

The Librarian II is a professional, managerial position responsible for coordinating, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of a designated library division.

Under the general direction of the Deputy Library Director, this position ensures alignment with the library's mission, goals, and service standards.

Provides leadership to assigned staff, oversees day-to-day operations, and contributes to strategic planning and organizational development.

The role also includes performing public service duties and participating in the overall management of the library.

The Lafayette Public Library serves a population of approximately 31,000 residents and is a member of the Marmot Library Network.

The library has a committed staff dedicated to facilitating equal access to services, community building, innovation, intellectual freedom, literacy, and lifelong learning.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE: Library principles and services for all ages including best practices for developing early literacy skills, teen and adolescent development and publishing trends and popular materials.
SKILL: Recruitment, selection, training and motivation of staff; excellent project management skills; excellent customer service skills; Skill in providing reference, reader's and media advisory service to all ages; Skill in using technology and helping users.
ABILITY: Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner; discern trends and affect change through gathering, evaluating and interpreting statistical data; plan, assign, coordinate, direct and evaluate the work of subordinates; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; prepare analytical reports using tables, graphs and charts; create and maintain positive staff relationships; effectively manage conflict; lead effectively by example, to inspire staff, and to promote enthusiastic teamwork; demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community; multi-task and set priorities; demonstrate innovation and flexibility; work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
TRAINING: Bachelor's degree required and master's degree in library science preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible library experience plus experience in library program and event development, and supervisory experience preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
