Cabling Technician
Summary:
Responsible for cabling and termination of Cat5, Cat6, CATV, Fiber, and various other wiring disciplines.
The position includes the testing and troubleshooting of wiring problems.
JOB FUNCTIONS
• Responsible for running and/or replacing new cabling in new or existing buildings.
• Termination and testing of new cabling.
• Responsible for testing and troubleshooting of cable.
• Physically install Enhanced Category 5, Category 6, and Fiber Structured Cable Distribution Systems.
• Accurately test copper and fiber cables to required certification parameters utilizing appropriate test equipment as required.
• Diagnose and correct copper and optical fiber problems.
• Removal and demolition of abandoned cables.
• Determine closet and equipment layouts and install closet hardware including backboards, connecting blocks, racks, patch panels and fiber enclosures, and balance video equipment.
• Perform work in retrofit and new construction environments and implement cut-overs.
• Attend training and safety meetings.
Work safely at all times utilizing the necessary Personal Protection Equipment.
Demonstrate safe working practices.
• Perform administrative tasks including, but not limited to, documenting test results and as-builts, providing labor summary reports, etc.
• Order and inventory materials.
• Develop project plan including required materials, deliver schedules, completion schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Communicates effectively and appropriately when dealing with other departments and/or personnel.
• Must have basic knowledge of power tools and safety equipment.
• Must have knowledge of basic computer skills and be able to demonstrate good writing skills.
• Must work well with little supervision individually and in a team environment.
• Possess a high level of independent judgment within established procedures.
• Ability to work extended hours (overtime) as needed.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Comfort with climbing, standing, and working on elevated surfaces to include ladders and lifts
• Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Must be available to travel when needed.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
PREFERRED:
• Fiber Splicing Certification
• Lift Certification
