The Director, Data Science External Innovation will lead the development of AI/ML strategic partnerships within key areas of focus.

This includes the application of cutting-edge multi-modal, life science-focused AI/ML models to drive scientific and disease insight from high-dimensional biological data, e.g., genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, high content imaging, text, and emerging modalities, as well as the use of frontier models for AI-based reasoning, planning, and execution of complex tasks across R&D (e.g., agentic AI).

Key activities include developing a deep understanding of the needs and opportunities in J&J, landscaping external companies and capabilities, engaging with external parties to diligence their capabilities and potential to collaborate, and leading strategic partnership development through to deal formation/execution.

This role requires substantial engagement with senior leadership in JJIM and scientists at all levels of the organization, spanning data science, therapeutic areas, discovery, and IT.

It also requires engagement with business and scientific leadership at current/potential partners, including leading AI-powered biotechs and technology companies.

Strong “bilingual” capabilities across scientific and computational topics are necessary, as well as excellent strategic, business, and communication skills.
