About the Role

We're seeking a passionate Environmental Research Scientist to contribute to our long-standing research efforts at our Forest Research Centre.

You'll lead applied research into hydrological interactions in mining and the unmined Jarrah Forest, providing expert advice on mine water management.

This involves developing and using soil-water and catchment-scale models, planning and executing research projects, and communicating findings to diverse audiences, including regulators.

Research will focus on rainfall, surface water, soil properties, erosion, groundwater, stream flow, water quality, and drought impacts.

Knowledge of hydrology, and ideally hydrogeology, soil science, and plant-water relations, is required, along with the ability to undertake fieldwork near Perth, WA.

Reporting to the Research Manager this role will be based at our Bindjareb Regional office in Pinjarra and will be offered on a family friendly Monday to Friday roster, with a leisure day off every 4 weeks allowing you to send more time doing the things you love.

Key Responsibilities include:


* Initiate, design, and develop joint research projects with internal and external scientists.


* Direct the research program focused on hydrology and water management in mine rehabilitation, including the impact of practices on water quantity and salinity.


* Design, implement, monitor, and report on local and catchment-scale trials to understand surface and groundwater dynamics in mined and unmined areas.


* Lead research on the relationships between rainfall, runoff, soil, erosion, stream flow, water quality, groundwater ecosystems, and drought impacts on tree health.


* Analyse long-term hydrological data and provide recommendations for adaptive management strategies.


* Deliver research programs to guide mining practices (pit design, groundwater, soil management, buffers) and effectively communicate research outcomes to stakeholders through various forums and publications.
