Engineering Technician I/II

ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside's Transportation Department has an opportunity for an Engineering Technician I or II supporting the Traffic Engineering division in Riverside.

The Engineering Technician will perform studies for establishing speed limits, manage traffic count and traffic investigations, deploy the department's radar trailer for speed checks, prepare engineering maps and plans, and other duties as required.

Please note that this position requires being outdoors to perform field work.

Competitive candidates will possess ArcGIS program and MicroStation experience, and experience working in civil, transportation, or traffic engineering.

The Engineering Technician II is the journey level classification in the Engineering Technician series and the first working level classification for traffic and transportation engineering projects, and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position.

The Engineering Technician II is distinguished from the Engineering Technician I in that the former is the fully qualified journey level in the series.

The level at which this position will be filled will be at the department's discretion.

Advancement to the next level in the Engineering Technician series is obtained by competitive selection through an open recruitment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Transportation Engineering:

• Perform limited design of roadways and appurtenant structures; revise elements of simple engineering designs within established limits.

• Calculate and compute quantity and cost of materials for a variety of construction projects; prepare maps using manual or computer aided techniques.

• Enter appropriate computer commands into system for mapping processes; digitize maps for data entry; operate plotter for computerized map preparation.

• Investigate and make diagrams, reports, and recommendations on high accident locations and other sites; coordinate traffic census programs; collect, interpret, record, and make graphical presentations from information gathered in traffic, transportation and other studies and surveys.

• Perform moderately difficult sub-professional field and office Engineering work.

• Set up and maintain filing and indexing systems for road record documents, survey records, maps, transportation data, and other engineering record materials.

• Inspect the construction of less complex public works projects and subdivision tracts to assure compliance with plans and specifications.
