Taxpayer Customer Associate (department Of Revenue) Afscme 3696

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Financial Control, assists customers with various notifications received from Cook County Departments.

Answers phone calls involving a high-level of customer service within a call center environment.

Gathers taxpayer information and documents, maintains office files/records and provides operational support to the Revenue department.

Assists staff with daily account management functions, serves as a departmental liaison and responds to inquiries posed by Cook County agencies, taxpayers, and tax violators.

Answers general or basic tax inquiries and provides information associated with the regulations, laws, policies and procedures for department-administered tax programs.

Researches customer account tax payment history and adjusts payment discrepancies when necessary.

Explains taxpayer responsibilities and penalties when taxpayer payment deadlines expire.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


* High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification.


* Two (2) years of full-time work experience as a Customer Service Representative or Cashier in a retail or public agency environment.

Candidates who are contacted will be required to produce original required documents (e.g., current driver's license, diploma, school transcript, certifications, etc.) listed on the Notice of Job Opportunity within five (5) days of being extended an offer, in writing, by the Bureau Chief of BHR (or designee).

*Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with others.

Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel with the ability to learn data management software.

Ability to apply basic mathematic skills with regards to office bookkeeping.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Strong customer service skills.

Ability to respond professionally via phone, by email or in person.

Skill exercising sound judgment relative to problem solving and referring problems to management.

Ability to understand and carry out written and/or verbal instructions in an accurate manner.

Ability to react effectively and calmly under pressure when necessary.

Ability to maintain taxpayer confidentiality.

Strong attention to detail with the ability to proof, verify and edit complex data.

Skill cross-referencing data from electronic files and paper documents.

Ability to follow-up in a thorough and timely manner relative to unresolved business.
