Victim/Witness Claims Technician

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office has an opportunity for a Victim/Witness Claims Technician to support their office located in Downtown Riverside.

Under general supervision, the Victim/Witness Claims Technician will assist clients applying for compensation reimbursement for medical cost and loss of income through the State Board of Control; to prepare initial and supplemental applications for victim compensation by verifying information and obtaining supporting documents; to represent victims at claims appeal hearings, and to do other work as required.

Incumbents in this class assist victims of crimes or their survivors applying for benefits from the State Victim Restitution Fund.

Under a joint powers agreement with the State Board of Control, incumbents verify information provided by the applicants and forward the completed applications and supporting documents directly to Compensation Fund Analysts in the State Board Office.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Assists victims of crimes, who have suffered an emotional or physical injury, in applying for compensation benefits for medical costs, funeral expenses, and/or loss of income.

• Reviews and evaluates victim applications for adherence to state statutory and eligibility requirements.

• Verifies all claims or unclaimed losses and sends notification letters to clients and service providers; prepares a summary report of information gathered and information needed.

• Calculates net loss to victim considering all other sources of compensation available such as health insurance, disability insurance, public assistance programs and court ordered restitution.

• Determines which documents will be necessary to support wage, medical or funeral loss claims; maintains contact with clients, employers, and service providers until all claims are verified.

• Obtains crime report from appropriate law enforcement agency.

• Contacts law enforcement officers, court officials, attorneys, probation officers, etc., to determine status of each case, whether victim contributed to the crimes occurrence, and whether or not restitution will be ordered.
