Probation Corrections Officer I

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Riverside County Probation Department is currently recruiting for Probation Corrections Officers to fill multiple vacancies throughout Riverside County.

This recruitment is for full-timepositions.

Under direct supervision, receives training and acquires skills in supervising and caring for youths in detention and/or treatment facilities of the Riverside County Probation Department; and performs other related duties as required.

Positions in this class are defined as peace officers in Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code and are subject to selection and training standards as defined by the California Government Code and the Board of State and Community Corrections.

The Probation Corrections Officer I is the entry-level and trainee classification within the Probation Corrections Officer series and typically reports to a Supervising Probation Officer.

Incumbents are expected to have an aptitude for supervising the activities of a group of youths in a detention or treatment environment.

Incumbents are assigned routine functions associated with the general operation of a living unit.

The Probation Corrections Officer I differs from the Probation Corrections Officer II in that the latter are assigned the more difficult and complex counseling duties requiring an understanding of those factors affecting a minor's motivation and behavior.

Probation Corrections Officer I incumbents are eligible for promotion to Probation Corrections Officer II upon successful completion of their probationary period, which requires a satisfactory job performance evaluation and completion of the following: Probation Corrections Officer Core training, PC 832, First Aid, and CPR.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• In a training capacity: supervise the conduct and behavior of youths; maintain necessary order and discipline; direct the groups in constructive activities and imposes restrictions when necessary.

• Prepare daily behavior reports; attempt to modify antisocial behavior and assist youths in adjusting to detention situations; provide guidance on personal problems such as relationships with peers, parents, and school personnel.

• Instruct and encourage good manners, sportsmanship, and proper attitudes towards work, play, and citizenship; plan organized recreation and group activities.
