Histotechnician

Nemours is seeking a Histotechnician to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, DE.

This position is responsible for: Performing histologic procedures, such as microtomy, embedding, frozen sections and staining, especially of surgical tissue.

This is a full-time dayshift with on call evening and weekend availability.

Essential Functions

1.

In a busy, clinical laboratory environment, performs technical procedures in histology, under the direction of the Pathology Supervisor and Pathologists, and in clinical situations requiring frequent interactions with pathologists about specimens and testing.

Routinely assists pathologist in preparing tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation.

Prepares stained and unstained slides from fixed and unfixed tissue; follows appropriate procedures for staining slides.

Prepares trimmed tissues and frozen sections.

Must be able to respond rapidly to urgent requests, such as preparation of frozen sections for patients under sedation in the operating room, including times when such requests occur at off hours, and the histotech is on-call for this support.

Performs staining techniques as appropriate or assigned.

Prepares tissues for histochemical evaluation.

Photographs specimens as instructed.

Receives and logs patient specimens, following laboratory policies about specimen statusing, accessioning, etc.

In this function must be able to read and understand a variety of written material such as patient surgical cards, tissue request forms and specimen requirement procedures.

Must be able to check reagent lots and other identification numbers and evaluate accuracy and completeness.

Must iden¬tify errors in such identification numbers and written information and respond appropriately, initiating corrective action which may include notification of pathologist, nurse, physician, lab administrator or others.

Uses laboratory equipment following established procedures.

Such equipment may include microscopes, centrifuges, stainers, embedding centers, tissue processors, cutting and weighing devices, and a variety of photographic (e.g., cameras, copy stand) and temperature controlled equipment.

Must follow safety procedures for all equipment.

Must follow maintenance procedures for all equipment.

Must record information as assigned, such as temperature, absorbance, etc.

Must report any problems in appropriate fashion.

Maintains laboratory records, kodachromes, slides and embedded tissues in a fashion which allows for rapid retrieval and safe storage for long periods of time.

4.

Picks up and delivers specimens as required or assigned; for example, may make routine delivery trips between the laboratory and the operating room.

5.

Maintains work area in a neat fashion, including disinfecting equipment, bench top, etc.

Performs cleaning (e.g., of lab, storage areas, etc.) as assigned.

Performs other tasks related to routine lab functions, such as retrieval of lab coats.
