Assistant General Counsel - Labor & Employment and Litigation

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant General Counsel - Labor & Employment and Litigation supports Human Resources by providing proactive and strategic oversight and counseling on labor and employment matters, and by maintaining and developing US employment policies and training that are compliant with federal, state, and local laws.  This role is also responsible for litigation support including selecting and managing outside counsel, supporting the discovery process, and directly handling routine litigation matters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant General Counsel - Labor & Employment and Litigation:


* Assists with federal, state, and local law compliance, generally in the US, as it relates to employment practices and policies; formulates, drafts and maintains policies that are not only compliant but also represent best practices for employers.


* Takes a strategic view regarding employment policies and practices and provides advice and counsel to the Human Resources organization to minimize risk and anticipate future developments. 


* Provides legal advice and consultation regarding workplace accommodations, background checks, leaves of absence, performance improvement plans, discipline, termination, and other issues. 


* Supports the management, negotiation and resolution of disputes within the role scope, including but not limited to: demand letters; settlement and separation agreements; mediation briefs, and position statements and responses.


* Provides support for litigation matters including by selecting and managing outside counsel, overseeing budgeting, supervising fact investigations, coordinating with company witnesses and supporting the discovery process.


* Develops and delivers effective training programs and training tools with consistency for all levels of the organization, and customized or micro-trainings for situations of particular risk that may arise.
