Principal Scientist | Agricultural Risk Modeling
Join our growing Research department as a member of our dynamic Boston-based agricultural risk modeling team.
You will develop models that describe agroecosystems and how they can be affected by extreme weather - across spatial scales from individual farms to entire countries.
As a member of this collegial team, you'll work both independently and collaboratively incorporating up-to-date scientific knowledge, data, and modeling approaches into our existing agricultural risk models and creatively developing and testing new crop and livestock models.
You will engage directly with clients to see how our work impacts them and grow your career with leadership opportunities.
This role is based in our Boston location which has a flexible hybrid work model (2-3 days per week in-office).
About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role
* Develop and support models for agricultural risk in the US and around the world, describing the relationships between agricultural losses (e.g., crop yield reduction or livestock mortality) and meteorological or other factors.
Assess and understand the statistical properties of and underlying drivers of model results.
* Lead research for application to future model development.
Engage with the needs of our clients and translate those needs into our modeling products.
Work collaboratively with agriculture market experts to develop market knowledge and domain expertise.
* Evaluate, build, and manage datasets that describe cropping systems in multiple regions of the world.
* Manage the collection and analysis of data related to assessing agricultural risk, such as temperature, precipitation, soil information, crop yields, crop damage, loss data, etc.
* Critically analyze weather data.
Understand temporal and spatial characteristics of the magnitude and variability of key meteorological variables affecting agricultural systems, such as air temperature, precipitation, and wind speed.
* Solve complex problems -- independently or by leading collaborations.
May lead projects or functional teams or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives
* Foster a team culture that encourages exploration of non-traditional ideas.
* Act as a resource for colleagues at many levels.
* Participate in the development of product or business strategy.
