Purpose:
* This project supports poverty alleviation by increasing equitable access to educational and cultural resources for underserved and multilingual communities across central and northern Delaware.
By translating interpretive walking tours into Spanish and creating a publicly accessible booklet, the Summer Associate helps reduce barriers that prevent non-English speaking or limited English proficiency visitors from fully participating in free, community-based learning experiences offered by First State Heritage Park and First State National Historical Park.
* The project builds capacity for the park by creating durable, multilingual interpretive materials that expand the park’s ability to serve a broader audience without increasing staff workload, aligning with strategies that strengthen long term outreach and program sustainability
* Over 8–10 weeks, the AmeriCorps Summer Associate will begin by shadowing existing interpretive programs and learning about park resources, spending time alongside experienced interpreters at both First State National Historical Park and First State Heritage Park.
Through guided observations the member will gain a deep understanding of interpretive storytelling methods, visitor engagement strategies, and the historical contexts presented at each site. Building on this foundation, the Summer Associate will translate existing interpretive walking tours into Spanish with accuracy and cultural respect; ensure translations reflect the tone, nuance, and visitor appropriate style observed during shadowing; design or support the visual layout of a clear, visitor friendly booklet summarizing each tour; collaborate closely with interpreters, community partners, and historically knowledgeable staff; assist with logistical planning to distribute finished materials to visitors. Through immersion, hands on practice, and guided mentorship, the Summer Associate will develop a strong working knowledge of park programs, interpretation techniques, and resource stories.

* The project builds capacity for the park by creating a comprehensive training plan for on boarding new Trail Steward Volunteers that expand the park’s ability to reach more volunteers and have a consistent on boarding process without increasing staff workload, aligning with strategies that strengthen long term outreach and program sustainability.
* The Summer VISTA will support First State National Historical Park’s Trail Steward Program, a volunteer initiative that assists with maintaining the park’s 27 miles of trails and administrative road.
Working alongside park staff—including maintenance, facilities, and volunteer management teams—the VISTA will develop a formalized volunteer onboarding and training plan to strengthen program consistency, safety, and long-term sustainability. The VISTA will complete this work at First State National Historical Park, primarily at the Brandywine Valley unit, where most Trail Steward activities occur.
The position is scheduled for the summer term, during which the volunteer program is most active.
By developing clear, accessible training processes and tools, the VISTA will help ensure that new volunteers can safely and confidently participate in trail maintenance, support stewardship projects, and contribute to the park’s mission of preserving natural and cultural resources.
