Abiomed Inc. は、経皮的・経血管的に挿入が可能なカテーテル型の補助人工心臓（pVAD：percutaneous Ventricular Assist Device）であるImpella（インペラ）を主力製品とし、患者さんの救命と自己の心機能の回復を目指しています。日本においては、2013年に日本法人（日本アビオメッド株式会社：東京都中央区日本橋室町2-2-1 室町東三井ビルディング12階）を設立し、2016年9月のImpella 補助循環用ポンプカテーテル（Impella 2.5/5.0）ならびにImpella 制御装置の薬事承認取得と2017年9月の保険収載を経て2017年10月より臨床において使用され、全国の240施設を越える医療機関に導入され、1万例以上の実績のある治療となっています（2024年3月末時点）。その間、Impella CP、Impella CP SmartAssist、Impella 5.5 SmartAssist、Impella 5.5 SmartAssist 2nd Generationといった新しいテクノロジーを搭載したポンプカテーテルの導入や、Impella Connectと呼ばれる遠隔モニタリングサービスの導入など、顧客のユーザビリティーを高め、患者予後をさらに向上させるための改良を重ねてきました。

現在、日本においては、薬物療法抵抗性の急性心不全を適応としていますが、米国・欧州では既に適応を取得している手術介入するリスクの高い重症冠動脈疾患患者に対する待機的・先制的なImpellaの使用を可能にする適応の拡大（ハイリスク血行再建）や、急性心筋梗塞によって生じる心筋ダメージを軽減し将来の心不全リスクを低減する治療に対す...
