General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled routine functions for water service customers by executing service orders created by customer service staff including start-up and shut-off of services, investigating water usage issues, reading meters, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Customer Service Manager.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working outdoors, be self-motivated and demonstrate a positive demeanor when interacting with staff and citizens.

Candidate will act as a liaison between meter readers and customer service and will complete service orders generated by customer service staff.

Service orders will consist of locking and unlocking of water meters, verifying meter reads and visual detection of potential water issues; which may be escalated to water personnel for resolution.

Candidate may also provide assistance to meter reading staff.

Must have the ability to communicate in a clear and timely manner for issues that occur in the field.

The Customer Service Technician should be prepared to interact with customers in a calm and professional manner and avoid dogs and other obstacles when walking onto unknown property.

Must have the ability to do basic math, have an attention to detail and the ability to safely navigate throughout the City.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and minimal experience in providing customer service or maintenance for public utilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications

Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position.

Valid Driver License of appropriate class.

Executes work orders in the field generated by customer service staff to include connection and disconnection, shut-offs for non-payment, meter re-reads, courtesy shut-offs and visual inspections.

Investigates locations with high consumption reads to determine cause; visually inspects meter box and meter for apparent damage or any abnormal conditions.

Submits service repair order to Public Works, if needed.

Responds to customer inquiries or complaints and reports information to appropriate parties.

Maintains detailed records and completes required paperwork.
