Training Specialist

Overview

Serves as USCG approved instructor, responsible for delivering course material and instruction of Kirby Inland Marine USCG approved training programs

Responsibilities



* Plans, prepares, and delivers lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate the education of navigational skills necessary to achieve a Mate (Pilot) of Towing on the Inland, Great Lakes, and Western Rivers.


* Communicate necessary information regularly to students and Sr.

Training Manager regarding student progress and needs to increase proficiency and skills.


* Develops schemes of work, lesson plans and conduct reports on assessments of potential candidates to enter the Kirby Steersman program.


* Conduct Final Watch Assessments of covered steersman to become Mate (Pilot) of towing vessels.


* Acts as instructor demonstrating and delivering course material for light boat handling, utilizing the Kirby training vessel.


* Assists with coordination and development of training classes.


* Assists with production, maintenance, and distribution of training materials.


* Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.


* Maintain an awareness of the status of new or pending license requirements.

Qualifications



* Sailed as Captain/Relief Captain on the Inland and Western Rivers.

Accrued at least 1,080 onboard days in the role of Captain/Relief Captain.

(720 days at when receiving credit for 1.5 days)


* Meet the USCG standards of a Qualified Instructor


* Currently hold or able to acquire an USCG Designated Examiner endorsement for Western Rivers


* Learn to operate and create simulations on the Kirby Full Mission Bridge Simulator.


* General Boating, Deck and Marlinspike Seamanship Skills relating to the towing industry.


* Knowledge of the U.S.

Coast Guard Regulations relating to towing vessels.


* Ability to produce written training material.


* Knowledge of Kirby Standard Operating Procedures.


* Ability to maintain organization, prioritization, coordination, and control in a fast-paced environment.


* Ability to understand, apply laws and regulations dealing with licensing and certifying marine personnel.


* Effective oral and written communication skills.


* Ability to make sound decisions with little or no input from others.


* Ability to operate standard office equipment, personal computer, and all training equipment.


* Knowledge and use of computer software.

Education/Experience:

High School Diploma or GED preferred

Experience:

Captain/Relief Captain for a minimum of 1080 onboard days on the Inland and Western Rivers.

(720 days when accounting for the 1.5 day credit on a towing vessel)

Physical Activities & Requirements:

Standard office demands.

Standing, sitting, walking.

May requirement lifting of up to 20 lbs boxes/files.

Typical working hours are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm...
