Government Programs Specialist - Older Adults

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Food Depository works intentionally through partnership to break down barriers of nutrition access for specific populations.

The Program Specialist will work collaboratively to support the design, implementation and logistics management of targeted food access programs that meet the needs of older adults.

The Food Depository partners with older adult community centers, residential buildings, and community organizations to address food and nutrition security amongst older adults and ensure they have access to the healthy food they need.

Traveling in the community a few hours per day, 2-3 times per week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•    Support the day-to-day coordination of federal commodity box programs and food pantry style programs designed for older adults.
•    Ensure all partners are operating in accordance with the Food Depository and USDA’s food service standards and providing food access to the targeted communities.
•    Provide on-going customer service and technical assistance support for program partners.
•    Conduct partner site visits to provide on-site support and to ensure strong partner relationships.
•    Identify new partnerships and resources to ensure the growth and development of program sites.
•    Work in collaboration with the Partner Services and Training team to facilitate annual training for program partners to ensure they are prepared for success.
•    Work to expand awareness of existing other food nutrition programs e.g.

SNAP through targeted community outreach efforts.
•    Support the client intake and reporting process to improve community partner and client experience.
•    Build strong relationships with partners and key stakeholders.
•    Develop knowledge of programs serving older adults and people with disabilities at the Food Depository and across Cook County and stay up to date on the latest developments including researching best practices and new innovations.
•    Work collaboratively across teams and departments to meet the needs of nutrition access program partners.
 
•    As needed, represent the Food Depository at conferences and coalition meetings.
•    As needed, provide support for funding opportunities, and provide necessary reports.
•    Other responsibilities as assigned.



* 2-3 years of experience in relationship management, project management, program implementation, and/or community organizing.


* Proficient computer skills, including MS Office applications, and the ability to quickly learn new software programs and online platforms.


* Well-versed in interpersonal communications (verbal, written, and presentation); able to be clear, persuasive, and dynamic across individual, small group, and large audience settings.


* Strong orientation towards customer service.


* Ability to work independently and proactively in a fluid environment, lead projects, meet multiple concurrent deadlines, and organize time and priorities.


* Must be passionate about meeting the needs of older adults and underserved communities.


* Must be comfortable working with diverse populations in various Cook County neighborhoods.


* Must have access to a working vehicle, with valid insurance and possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.


* Knowledge of the landscape of older adult work within Cook County, preferred.


* Bilingual Spanish, preferred.

Exposure:



* Normal office environment; some warehouse environment; some field work each week.


* Hybrid work environment, with Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in office.


* Occasional out of office meetings and events.


* Some evening and weekend work may be required depending on events.


* Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Cook County.


* Interacts with Food Depository staff; partners; governmental agencies; volunteers; funders and public.
