Health Unit Coordinator – Family Birth Center – EI 32/33

Location: Eisenberg 32, 33, 35, Desk 3C (EI32, EI33, EI35) - The Family Birth Center
Patient Care Type: The Family Birth Center cares for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum patients and their newborn babies.

The staff consists of RNs and PCAs who deliver patient care.

The area is supported by a variety of resource persons including health unit coordinators, perinatal education coordinators, nursing education specialists, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, and lactation consultants.

Physicians from the following Mayo Clinic departments provide care: Obstetrics, Family Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatology, Pediatrics, and Anesthesiology.

Certified nurse midwives and neonatal nurse practitioners also provide care for our patients.

The focus of care is family-centered delivered through couplet care model.

Position description

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the health care team.

These duties include monitoring and ordering supplies, and may also include transcribing orders to patient electronic medical record and other communication devices.

The HUC communicates effectively via a variety of modalities with patients, visitors, and facility staff and plays an integral role in communication across the continuum of care.

The HUC functions as a resource to members of the health care team and is familiar with multiple Mayo Clinic resources.

The HUC activities complement the patient care delivery model.

The HUC carries out all aspects of the job using good judgment and problem-solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, and assumes responsibility for self-development within the role and participates in continuous improvement activities.

The HUC supports the healthcare team by anticipating and responding to team requests and patient needs.


High school diploma or equivalent required.

Basic knowledge of computer systems and strong keyboarding skills (i.e., Windows-based applications, LAN use, and intranet/internet use) required.

Additional qualifications

Successful completion of college, HUC vocational program, or HUC Certification preferred.

Outstanding customer service, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Adapts effectively to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting.

Availability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Internal applicants should attach their last three performance appraisals.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.

The minimum pay rate is $17.68 per hour.
