Civil/Geotechnical Inspector/Pittsburgh, PA/JS

We are searching for a Civil/Geotechnical Inspector for our Pittsburgh, PA location to provide junior-level technical support for geotechnical and oil/gas projects, in Southwestern Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia.

Projects are primarily in the areas related to geology, geotechnical engineering, slope stability, site development, fieldwork, and data interpretation/presentation.

Capable of executing field programs under the direction/guidance of engineers and managers.

Develop responsibility for basic tasks/projects.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned.

? Provide geotechnical engineering, geology, and slope stability input to projects.
? Perform project tasks on geotechnical engineering projects.
? Significant involvement as team member on field tasks including interaction with contractors, clients, local and state officials.
? Support investigation and construction projects, including construction oversight and inspection on geotechnical projects and test boring inspection.
? Extensive overnight travel may be required to other states and locations, depending on project needs and support required.

Travel expenses will be paid per current General Service Administration Rate System.

Majority of the field work will be in Northern to Central West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania.
? Perform field investigations in adverse weather conditions, in difficult terrain for extended hours.
? Ability to work independently, read and understand engineering specifications, have excellent written and oral communication skills.
? Assume supporting technical role for projects and/or programs.
? Assume supporting roles in proposals and marketing.
? Perform field testing, sampling, and investigation work.


Bachelor?s degree (BA/BS) in a geosciences related field required.

Master?s degree (MS/MA) or additional certifications preferred; 3-6 years of experience related to civil geotechnical construction experience with a minimum 2 years focused on slip / slide management including preliminary evaluations of slip / slide prone areas, identification, monitoring, mitigation and remediation oversight is required.

Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and detailed methods of installation to ensure compliance with engineering design, and federal, state or local government requirements.

Strong technical, writing, and verbal communication skills required.

General computer, word processing, and spreadsheet capabilities are required.

Knowledge/experience in computer-based, geosciences-related, data evaluation software is desirable but not necessary.

? Ability to identify slip / slide prone areas using available historical data, soils testing data and geotechnical report details prior to construction;
? Ability to recognize slip / slide prone areas based on visual observations of materials and conditions during construction activities;
? Ability to identify slips / slides during all phases of construction;
? Ability to perform slip / slide monitoring and complete related documentation;
? Understand slip / slide design mitigation and remediation documents, construction and related materials;
? Understand soil stabilization designs, construction and related materials;
? Experience in or knowledge of geotechnical drilling activities including oversight, documentation, logging, sample acquisition, labeling and disposition;

Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer License is desired or the ability to obtain within two years of the date of employment.

Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical documents and procedures, and government regulations.

Ability to write detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedures suitable for client submittal.

Ability to effectively present information, communicate, and respond to questions from groups of coworkers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Effective communication skills, both orally and in written form.

Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a member of a project team to successful completion of site investigation and oversight activities.

Ability to perform strenuous fieldwork under a variety of site and weather conditions.

Ability to perform and maintain rigorous, detailed documentation of field activities.

Ability to travel to and work for short time periods at remote project locations as needed.

Ability to interpret field conditions and develop basic slope stability repair plans for review by managers and engineers.

Ability to communicate effectively with contractors and engineers during the installation of slope stability mitigation features and repairs.
